MSc thesis project proposal

Graphene as back contact for poly-Si based solar cells

The low value of resistivity (~400 microOhm-cm) of multi-layered graphene (MLG) results a very promising way to exploit the material as back contact for any kind of silicon (Si)-based solar cells. This need becomes from the requirement of the solar cells industry to reduce the metal consumption for the back part of the devices.

The goal of this ambitious project is to optimize the properties of MLG grown by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), such as thickness, level of defectiveness and resistivity, in order to minimize the back contact resistance between MLG and Si- and polySi -based solar cells. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate that MLG down to single layer graphene can make the reduction (or removal) of silver easier.

The idea was born by a joint collaboration between two groups of TU Delft: ECTM (Electronic Components, Technology and Materials) and PVMD (Photovoltaic Materials and Devices). The candidate will be thus supervised by members of both groups.
