[2023] Shape Sensing for Flexible Ultrasound Transducer Arrays

  • Ultrasound probes employ arrays of transducer elements to coherently send and receive ultrasound waves. In conventional probes, these transducer arrays are rigid. As a result, the relative position of the elements is well-defined. Upcoming wearable ultrasound devices, in contrast, will have to be flexible and even stretchable, implying that the position of the elements will change over time. Without compensation for the relative movement of the elements, proper coherent detection and beamforming are not possible.
  • In this project, we will look for innovative solutions to track the position of the elements in a flexible transducer array. The project will start with an inventory of possible sensing approaches, which can be done in the form of a 15 EC project if desired. Based on the outcomes, a full thesis project can be devoted to the realization of a prototype.
